Auckland Wine Week – Profile on Marek Przyborek
A lot of people have contributed to the launch of the inaugural Auckland Wine Week.
There are the event partners and organisers, the media who have promoted it and the public who support it. Of course it wouldn’t be happening at all without the viticulturalists and winemakers who have used their respective talents to create vinous gold in the first place.
But let’s not forget the Sommeliers – the wine professionals you see most often.
Since March 2019 Marek Przyborek has been Head Sommelier of Skycity Auckland. Previously Marek was Head Sommelier at Huami Restaurant, Skycity and Deputy Head Sommelier at Northcote (*Michelin, Langho, UK). He has also held various positions in different restaurants in his native Poland. Marek spends a lot of time around wine.
Marek is very good with wine too. He was named Sommelier of the Year NZ in 2018 and before that in 2017 he was Sommelier of the Year in Poland. We can’t help but wonder if he might move somewhere soon just to make up a hat-trick!
The wine list of Huami (created by Cameron Douglas MS, maintained and evolved by Marek) was awarded with the Best Award of Excellence (2 glasses) by Wine Spectator in 2018. Now Marek works across the Sky City restaurants and is excited also to be contributing to Auckland Wine Week. Look out for these specials on at the Sky City entertainment precinct:
Orbit will be focusing on promoting Auckland wines on the menu
A private trade tasting will be run with Nick Stock (AU) specifically for hospitality wine professionals and sommeliers on Saturday prior to lunch service at Gusto at the Grand.
The Sugar Club on 20th June will see Villa Maria's Senior Wine Maker host a special Family of Twelve dinner - six courses with matching wines from the premium Family of Twelve stable which also includes Kumeu River.
The official launch dinner of Auckland Wine Week takes place today (Thursday 13 August) at Gusto at the Grand. This glitzy event will feature no less than 14 wines from local Auckland wineries!
Cheers Marek and Sky City - thanks for supporting local this Auckland Wine Week!
